Jon Gjylaci

Jon Gjylaci is a Greek/Albanian classical guitarist based in the UK and is regarded as one of the leading young guitarists of his generation. After winning a number of scholarships, he attended the Royal Northern College of Music where he studied under the internationally acclaimed guitarist Craig Ogden. He graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree and was awarded distinction for his Postgraduate Diploma in Performance.

Jon regularly participates in International Guitar Festivals across Europe and over the years he has received training from highly regarded professors in the field of classical guitar such as Gordon Crosskey, Hubert Kappel and Aniello Desiderio. Jon has won numerous Prizes and Awards in Greece and the UK including first prize at the Pan-Hellenic Music Competition, Runner up at the RNCM Salon Prize and Award Winner at the ‘Ivor Mairants International Guitar Competition’ in London.

He regularly performs as a soloist and chamber musician within the UK and across Europe and has performed with the Corfu Symphony Orchestra, Manchester String Orchestra and the Northern String Quartet. Recent performances include concerts at St Martin-in-the-Fields, Bridgewater Hall, Royal Northern College of Music, Didsbury Arts Festival and Manchester Guitar Circle.

In 2015 the British composer Helen Walker wrote a set of 5 original compositions for him entitled ‘Five Divertissements’. Jon gave the world premiere of these new pieces as part of the ‘International Guitar in Bolton’ concert series

His debut album ‘’Valley of Echoes’’ was released in 2012 and includes a variety of classical, contemporary, tango and jazz music for solo guitar. Classical Guitar Magazine commented on his “…very impressive technical ability, which enables him to flash around the fingerboard in an apparent effortless manner” and wrote: ‘’…this is a fine album from a highly talented player.’’

In 2016, Jon released his second solo album including works by Albeniz, Chopin, Brouwer and Ryan amongst other composers. In this project he collaborated with the charismatic Northern String Quartet and Percussionist Michael Walker

Jon is in increasing demand as a performer due to his wide ranging repertoire, “brilliant interpretations”, “compelling quality to his guitar playing” and his ability to connect with the audience. He currently holds the post of guitar tutor at the Junior RNCM and Bolton School Boys’ Division.

This album is a celebration of music from around the world. From the intimate atmosphere of the Parisian salon and the folk idioms of Spain to Kenya's infectious Benga rhythms and the energetic samba beats of Brazil.

The debut recording of Jon Gjylaci and combines a selection of Classical, Latin and Jazz music for solo guitar. The pieces are a blend of original compositions and arrangements. Includes large scale works and short encores that have earned an important part in the large and ever expanding guitar repertoire.
